On June 28, 2012 the Canadian Paraplegic Association of Newfoundland and Labrador will be holding its Annual General Meeting at the Holiday Inn St. John’s where the organization will be officially launching its new company name “Spinal Cord Injury Newfoundland and Labrador”. The change coincides with our National body who adopted the name Spinal Cord Injury Canada on May 4 2012.
The Canadian Paraplegic Association leaves behind 67 years of History as the organization was originally founded by veterans of the Second World War who wanted to form an organization that would assist those who were returning with an injury achieve independence, self-reliance and full community participation. The Canadian Paraplegic Association has grown over the years to offer a wide range of services to individuals living in this country with a spinal cord injury or significant mobility impairment. With this growth in mind, a hard decision was made to change the name after it was realized that Canadian Paraplegic Association no longer captured the full scope of the individuals the organization were assisting.
Spinal Cord Injury Canada speaks to the vast majority of the individuals that we help on a daily basis through Rehabilitation Counselling, Career and Employment Disability Case Management, Peer Support and Community Advocacy. Spinal Cord Injury Newfoundland and Labrador not only hopes that our current members feel better represented by the organizations name change, but that other individuals in our great province may develop an interest in this organization where they may have not felt included before.
